Victim No More! Getting Out of the Victim Trap
As MindBodyGreen.com points out, We all get caught in the victim-trap from time to time. Feeling like weve been wronged; like we were right and they were . . . well. Unfortunately, the article continues, feeling like a victim tends to trigger a downward cycle and you only feel worse. We hang-out in victim-land because we hope it will bring us care, concern, and love. Then, of course, it doesnt.
So, what do you do?
First, remember that nobody is responsible for your life except you. You can be affected by other peoples actions and words; but, ultimately, your sense of well-being depends upon your own attitude. The article gets even blunter: If your happiness is dependent on what other people do or don’t do, then frankly, you’re screwed.
Bottom line: to stop the victim spiral, own your own part in any situation. Take personal responsibility. Be responsible for your own life, both now and in the future.
What About Being a Crime Victim?
When people think about being a victim, they often think more specifically about being a crime victim. The National Crime Prevention Council offers safety tips, including these (and more):
- If you think someone is following you, switch directions or cross the street. If the person continues to follow you, move quickly toward an open store or restaurant or a lighted house. Dont be afraid to yell for help
- Lock your car, even if its in your own driveway; never leave your motor running.
- Carry only the money youll need on a particular day.
If youre interested in teaching people in your community about how to protect themselves, the National Rifle Associations Refuse to Be a Victim Online Instructor Development Workshop, an award-winning program, will show you how to improve their personal safety strategies, and what techniques and tactics can be used to help avoid becoming easy victims of crime. In general, seminars heighten public awareness of what can and should be done to stay safe. Note that there is a fee of $250 for this class.
