With new concealed carry permits exploding in Ohio, changes in the states stand your ground statute are seen as a welcome change by many. This week, an Ohio legislative panel cleared a measure that makes broad changes to the states gun laws. The changes would include the addition of a stand your ground self-defense rule. The measure would change the circumstances in which Ohioans could use force to defend themselves without having a duty to first retreat from an attacker.
Currently, Ohio law requires people to retreat if they are attacked unless they are in their homes or cars. The change, if enacted, would eliminate a persons duty to retreat before using force in the face of a serious physical threat. Supporters of the provision, many of whom are already concealed carry permit holders, believe that no person should have to retreat to ensure their own safety. A vote on the measure is expected soon.
